2007 Award Winners: The Chairman's awardPROJECT: Tonic, Energy DrinkFrom: Nguni Juice CCNguni Juice CC is a Soweto-based start-up BEE company founded specifically to engage in the commercialisation of value-added products from indigenous fruits and plants. The project involved developing the proprietary process for the processing of a beneficial wild fruit from an indigenous southern Africa tree to produce a unique and caffeine free natural energy drink. The specific fruit variety is said to contain a variety of vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids. The fruit tree is a native of southern Africa and its fruit is traditionally consumed as a source of energy in rural areas. Nguni Juice CC is already selling its product in Soweto and has attracted the interest of a number of food retail stores. A by-product of the juice production process is medicinal oil, which is currently undergoing clinical tests to determine its potential for the relief of ear ailments. Contact:
